Back for a fifth year, The Monument Mile Classic will again host an electric evening of track mile racing by athletes of all ages. On the evening of Friday 20th May 2022, and on the athletics track on the stunning University of Stirling campus, competitors from across the UK will descend on Stirling to compete for the fastest mile time across 33 consecutive track mile races.

This iconic event is set in the shadow of Stirling’s famous landmark, the Wallace Monument, standing tall above the fields where William Wallace led his troops to victory at The Battle of Stirling Bridge, and became Scotland’s National Hero. Competitors will once again do battle in Stirling on the evening of 20th May 2022.

Watts Group Limited is proud to announce its partnership with Central Athletic Club and The University of Stirling to further support this increasingly popular and successful event. To cater for demand, a further 3 races have been added to the event bringing the total number of races for the event to 33, following an initial ticket sell-out back in January.

Michael Wright, Race Director for The Monument Mile Classic said: “We are thrilled to be receiving support from Watts Group Limited for the first time for our race event. It is great that they recognise the importance of supporting community sport events in the UK for athletes of all ages, and we are very grateful to receive their support. With their support we can further enhance the event we are offering our athletes”.

The Monument Mile Classic will be providing limited edition caps for the winners of each race, and thanks to the support of GSS Developments, pyrotechnics will be introduced to the event for the first time to further enhance the experience for the athletes. To inspire the next generation, none other than Team GB Olympians, Andrew Butchart and Lynsey Sharp, will be toeing our start lines.

Andrew goes in the elite men’s race. Andrew has run in the 5,000m final at both the Rio Olympics and the Tokyo Olympics. With a 3:54mins mile to his name, the elite men’s race is going to go fast.  Lynsey Sharp, a Team GB Olympian, a European Champion, and a Commonwealth Games medallist, will be pacing the elite women’s race.

All competitors on the night will be seeking to follow in the fast-paced footsteps of legends such as Sebastian Coe, Steve Ovett, Roger Bannister – and at The Monument Mile Classic in 2020 – Jonny Davies, all of whom have broken the magical 4-minute-mile.

The Monument Mile Classic is a Scottish Athletics Licensed event, and all times will be recorded using photo finish equipment.

Iain McLaren, Scotland Lead Director of Watts Group Limited said “Watts are delighted to be partnering with both Central Athletic Club and The University of Stirling for this exciting and challenging event, as part of our continued commitment to supporting sport in our local communities throughout the UK. With the event being co-ordinated by our very own ‘Marathon Man’ Michael Wright, we are sure this will be an exciting evening of racing for participants and spectators alike.
